Vance Joy led a heartfelt tribute to late music industry legend Michael Gudinski at the 2021 ARIA Awards on Wednesday.

Before presenting the Michael Gudinski Breakthrough Artist ARIA Award, the 33-year-old recalled how the Mushroom Records boss first came across his music.

‘The first time he ever saw me play, it was at a small tapas bar in Melbourne and he like grooved along and made a lot of applause when no one was listening,’ the singer recalled.

‘He personally promoted my single Riptide and from then on was always there championing and supporting me and it’s an honour to celebrate him tonight.’

A video package then played messages from Michael’s close friends and artists, including Jimmy Barnes who called him a ‘force of nature’ and said ‘he was so passionate about music’.

‘Michael spent every night of the week going out to see young bands playing, he put his own heart, soul and money into every band he supported,’ Jimmy added.

Ed Sheeran revealed that Michael ‘would get so animated about these songs, he would literally turn up in the middle of a tour of Asia one night and sit with me and drink wine and play the music.

‘Every time I would see him he would have a new band or a new artist or a new rapper that he would be playing me, and it wasn’t even people signed to his label it was just Australian music he was excited about,’ the Shape Of You singer added.

He went on to present the inaugural Michael Gudinski Breakthrough Artist ARIA Award to Budjerah who became overcome with emotion in his acceptance speech.

The 19-year-old also revealed his connection to the late music titan before his passing earlier this year.

He said: ‘Thank you to Michael, I only spoke to him twice but he opened a lot of doors for me.’

Earlier in the evening, host Brooke Boney gave a special nod to the music legend before his image was featured in the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of the awards show.

‘The past year has been one of the toughest for the Australian music industry,’ Boney said. ‘We missed gigs, festivals and just being in the same room as each other.’

‘And sadly, we also lost some of our friends and peers; titans of the industry who paved the way for many of tonight’s winners and nominees.’

Michael Gudinski died in his sleep earlier this year after consuming a fatal mix of drugs.

His death certificate, made public in court documents at the Supreme Court of Victoria, revealed he was also suffering cirrhosis of the liver and ischaemic heart disease, and had recently fractured his spine.
