Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire says the furore surrounding its ugly board stoush has left him “cut to the core” and the club “look like a laughing stock”.
It comes after reports emerged last week that lawyers – led by Francis Galbally – representing a group of disgruntled members pushing for an EGM (Extraordinary General Meeting) lodged a complaint to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
Magpies president Mark Korda hit back by accusing challenger Jeff Browne and his supporters of bullying, “smears” and a sense of “entitlement,” defending the club’s decision to not hand over membership details of those trying to trigger an EGM.

Speaking on Channel 9’s Footy Classified on Wednesday night, a furious McGuire – who has so far kept out of the bitter face off – called for Korda and Browne to meet up and discuss the best interests of the club to avoid an EGM.

“There has been some things that I have been very dismayed about in the process to this particular moment in time,” he told Nine‘s Footy Classified.
“The first thing is that whole EGM nonsense, it was just a debacle and an embarrassment to the Collingwood Football Club.
“And people running around threatening to go to ASIC just cuts me to the core that anyone who would say they‘re a Collingwood supporter would go to ASIC or go to the law before you sort it out at the Collingwood Football Club like we’ve been able to do for the best part of a quarter of a century.
“I can see this going on and on and on unless something happens and it‘s time for people who have the love of Collingwood as their main mantra to now step up.”
McGuire – the longstanding Magpies president for 23 years – outlined a road map back for board stability at the club.
“The first thing I want is I want Jeff Browne to pull the pin on any EGM. I don‘t want an EGM at the Collingwood Football Club, (I want) the AGM to go ahead in December but with a twist,” he said.
“It‘s made us look like a laughing stock.
“The reason why we have the best sponsors and things is because we‘re a professional outfit that doesn’t carry on.”

McGuire called for the club to bring Browne – who he is close friends with – into the selection process for its next senior coach as a “peace plan” to ensure he has the backing of both presidency candidates.
He also requested Collingwood appoint an independent electoral officer ombudsman to overlook an impending election.
“I’m starting to hear shenanigans happening around the place of stacking and branching and threatening and all this other routine that I thought I had exterminated out of Collingwood 23 years ago,” McGuire said.
“The only thing that‘ll bring me back to the fray is if I see people vandalising the Collingwood Football Club going forward.
“I want an independent electoral officer and an ombudsman appointed from this moment on and a line of sight on how this election is going to be called and what‘s going to happen, whether it’s an EGM or an AGM.
“Let’s do it properly, I want us to stay out of the courts. I want to stop people going to the media who are Collingwood haters and getting them to stitch our club up and make us look like a laughing stock, we‘re all sick of it.”
Lastly, McGuire wants to see both Korda and Browne publicly outline their future vision of the club instead of “people snipping around on the outside,” saying “the only objective now is the best for Collingwood”.
“I want a battle of ideas, I don‘t want people snipping around on the outside. I want the incumbent board to tell me what the future of this football club is all about and I want Jeff Browne to step up and tell us what his idea of a future is. A sophisticated process for sophisticated people for a sophisticated football club.
“There have been too many lunatics running around the fringes in the last six months and we‘re not copping it anymore.
“The only objective now is the best for Collingwood, it worked for 23 years. And that‘s not having a crack at any person individually, it’s just gotten out of shape, now let’s pull it together, look forward to the future.”
