The one-time trawler operator from the south coast of NSW was discovered unresponsive in a common area of Sydney’s Long Bay prison on November 26, Corrective Services NSW said.

He was found at 9.15am and pronounced dead 20 minutes later.

Corrective Services and NSW Police confirmed they were investigating his death.

‘All deaths in custody are subject to a coronial inquest,’ Corrective Services said.

Drenkhahn was to return to the Wollongong District Court on November 30, after he was hit with eight new charges on November 23.

Before he was issued with the additional charges, Drenkhahn would have been eligible for parole on December 3 this year.

Among the charges were committing an act of indecency with a girl under 16 and indecent assault on a boy aged 14 or older.

According to the ABC, Drenkhahn allegedly sexually abused the trio of boys and the girl while on sporting club camping trips at Berkeley, Childowla, Lake Illawarra, and Wyangala Dam in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Before he died at Long Bay, Drenkhahn was set to return to the Wollongong District Court on November 30, after he was laid with eight fresh child sex abuse charges on November 23
