Breaking up: Serena Pitt rejected on  Matt James on Monday's episode of The Bachelor after their hometown visit on the ABC show

Matt James wept after contestant Serena Pitt rejected him on Monday’s episode of The Bachelor.

The 23-year-old publicist from Toronto didn’t feel as strongly for Matt, 29, as he did for her, and eliminated herself from the competition.

‘I thought that it was fear initially, that I was just scared,’ Serena told Matt after he met her family during Hometown Week. ‘But I think if I’m being honest with myself, it’s more than that. I think it just comes down to the fact that I don’t think you’re my person.’

Matt looked completely stricken as Serena spoke, and fumbled for words, unable at first to respond much at all.

Serena was one of just four women whose families had flown out to the Nemacolin Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania, for their coronavirus-era hometown visits with Matt.

He was clearly serious about Serena, and had gone to speak to her after she’d earlier expressed some doubt.

Learning that she was actually eliminating herself devastated him.

‘It sucks to hear that,’ Matt said slowly, as his face fell. ‘But I felt it after I left that conversation with your family, that there was something off with you. It just stinks.’

‘I’m just not there,’ Serena told Matt. ‘And I don’t know why.’

Matt rubbed her shoulders reassuringly, telling her she didn’t have to say or do anything else.

Wrong person: 'But I think if I'm being honest with myself, it's more than that. I think it just comes down to the fact that I don't think you're my person,' Serena told Matt

‘You wanna walk me downstairs?’ he asked, as they both acknowledged that things had changed.

Serena led Matt to a waiting limo, and said, ‘See ya,’ as if she couldn’t find the right words.

In a confessional, Matt’s eyes filled with tears, and he said he was disappointed with how things turned out.

‘That’s not how I saw our journey ending,’ he shared. ‘That was tough. The easy thing to do when talking to Serena was run, and that’s what I wanted to do, ’cause that’s what I’ve seen my whole life, is just to run from difficult conversations. But nothing gets resolved.’

Matt started thinking about the show’s other contestants, concerned their feelings might change and he might leave with a broken heart.

At the week’s rose ceremony, he reiterated that each of them needed to think ‘long and hard’ about the commitment they could be making to him.

All three women—Rachael Kirkconnell, 24, Michelle Young, 27, and Bri Springs, 24—then got roses.

Things had been very different from The Bachelor’s usual Hometown Weeks, which usually found the bachelor flying around to his suitors’ homes.

Citing ‘extraordinary times,’ show host Chris Harrison, 49, said that in contrast to past seasons, this year’s ‘visits’ would be conducted at Nemacolin, where they’d all been staying.

The first visit went to Michelle, an elementary school teacher from Edina, Minnesota, who took Matt on a bike ride that ended in him breaking his bike chain.

She also had Matt meet her young students via video, and they had plenty of questions for him.

The kids asked Matt if he was ‘Ms. Young’s’ boyfriend, if they’d kissed, if he planned to marry her and have babies, and how many girlfriends he had.

Afterward, he met Michelle’s mother LaVonne and father Ephraim, who said they could see how happy their daughter was.

‘There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for someone I love,’ Matt reassured Ephraim. ‘And if that means me moving to Minnesota, that means me moving to Minnesota. I’m open to that conversation with your daughter because with that feeling that I have for her, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do that would keep me from being with her.’

For her part, Michelle told her parents she would marry Matt tomorrow if he asked her, and told Matt she was falling in love with him.

Rachael, the show’s front-runner and a graphic designer from Cumming, Georgia, was up next.

She blindfolded Matt and took him for a ride to an open field, where he learned they were to go skydiving.

The couple would be free-falling from 12,000 to 5,000 feet at 120 miles an hour, their instructors promised.

As a thrill-seeker who loved surprises, Matt thought it was a perfect date.

‘Everything that I’ve learned about Rachael up to this point is drawing me in,’ he told the cameras. ‘The fact that I’m feeling this now is scary.’

Rachael seemed infinitely calmer than Matt did as they jumped from the plane.

‘Matt, I’ve told you that I’ve been falling for you,’ she said as they descended. ‘And now, I’m literally falling for you.’

Moments later, Matt landed and then Rachael came crashing down with her flying partner, who rolled over her body.

‘Rachael!’ Matt yelled as he ran to her, observing the ‘gnarly’ impact.

‘Oh my God, my back is killing me,’ Rachael said. ‘I have so much grass inside my mouth right now.’

Matt said the idea of Rachael being injured put everything into perspective.

‘My heart hurt, watching you,’ he told her. ‘Cause you weren’t moving for a second. And I was like, you don’t realize how much you care until there is a chance that you could be gone.’

Rachael choked up as he continued, ‘It’s a different feeling when you’re falling in love and that person’s potentially really hurt. And the thought of like, losing you, set in at that moment and I was just like ”Damn. We’re just getting started.” I didn’t realize how strongly I felt until something like that happens.’

Rachael put on a brave face but later confessed to her mom that she was so bruised from the fall she’d slathered on makeup.

Her father Darrell was skeptical about Matt, saying that a few weeks wasn’t enough to get engaged, wondering how Matt could care for his daughter when he was dating several people, and doubting that Rachael was in love.

Matt affirmed to Darrell that he and Rachael were more connected than he’d ever been with anyone, but it wasn’t enough.

‘To me it’s very quick to get to the point where you’re talking about getting engaged or married,’ Darrell said to the cameras. ‘It’s a little unrealistic. And he’s got other ladies here. So who knows, what he’s telling Rachael he could be turning around and saying to the other two or three ladies.’

Rachael insisted to her father that she was different, and hoped that Matt would ask for his blessing to propose, but Matt did not.

For his next hometown visit, he and Bri, a communications manager from San Francisco, went off-roading and picnicked in the woods.

From there, Matt went straight to meeting Bri’s mom Lauren, her baby sister, and best friend.

Lauren had raised Bri on her own, much like Matt’s mom had him.

‘If I’m being honest with you, the level that we connect on is different from the conversations and connections that I have with other women here,’ he told Lauren. ‘And I realized that early on when I shared with her what it’s like to grow up with a single parent.’

‘Are you in love with her?’ Lauren asked him point-blank.

‘I’m falling for her,’ Matt said. ‘That’s not the assurance that you’re probably looking for, but it’s my honesty and how I’ve gone about thinking about this process.’

Bri told her mother that she felt like Matt saw ‘every part’ of her, but worried it was too soon to feel like she did.

‘It’s crazy, but it’s not crazy,’ Lauren said reassuringly. ‘Worst-case scenario, we are mending a broken heart together. But we’ll survive.’

Bri eventually told Matt she was falling for him, to which he said, ‘Thank you for sharing that with me tonight.’

Matt’s last hometown was with Serena, who told him all about being Canadian.

She showed him a map of Canada, fed him poutine, beat him at ice hockey and taught him words like ‘toque.’

That night, Serena told her sister Talia that Matt ‘checked every box,’ and she was falling for him, but admitted his feelings were stronger than hers.

‘Matt is everything I would want for you,’ Talia replied. ‘To me, it just seems like there is something missing. You don’t seem smitten.’

She worried that Serena might talk herself into marriage, then realized she’d messed up.

Serena had the same concern, and told her mother Rasna, ‘I just don’t want to be standing there like, ”What am I doing? You’re not my person. I’ve made a huge mistake”.’

She acknowledged that she was still hurting from a past relationship, and said that she felt a ‘deep doubt’ about Matt.

When he went to speak to her about it the next day, Serena eliminated herself.

The Bachelor’s ‘Women Tell All’ special will air next Monday on ABC, followed by the season 25 finale on March 8.
