A baby and their mother have been infected with Covid as a cluster grows in a vulnerable part of Australia.

A baby and their mother have both contracted Covid-19 in the NT after being close contacts of a three-year-old who became infected earlier this week.

The pair were the only two new cases recorded on Wednesday, bringing the current cluster to 63.

Both cases were already in quarantine when they returned a positive test.

The mother, whose three-year-old became infected last week, returned a negative result for the virus on December 5 but later tested positive.

The infant is also a household contact of the three-year-old who lived in a family grouping with extended family.

Of the 31 people linked to the infected three-year-old, 18 test results have been returned.

“We do expect possibly some more positive cases but those people are all in appropriate quarantine so we’ll update the community as soon as we get those results,” NT Health Minister Natasha Fyles said.

Currently, more than 200 close contacts have been associated with the cluster.
