Desperate Dan Walker launches PR blitz to avoid the axe from Strictly Come Dancing

Struggling Strictly hopeful Dan Walker has been repeatedly plugging his appearance on the show in a publicity onslaught apparently aimed at staying in the line-up.

After being spared elimination once again last weekend, the Breakfast presenter mentioned his involvement to the three million viewers of the morning programme on both Monday and Tuesday.

On Thursday, he was given a 13-minute slot on The One Show with dance partner Nadiya Bychkova.

Rounding off his blitz of self-promotion on Friday, Walker turned up on Strictly spin-off It Takes Two – meaning he had four days of exposure to millions of viewers that his fellow contestants missed out on.

It comes amid accusations that there is favouritism towards Walker, a long-serving BBC star.

The 44-year-old last week escaped the dance-off, even though his score of 31 put him at the bottom of their leader board.

While some viewers suspect his PR push has helped him remain popular, others are so fed-up with him using Breakfast to promote his dancing that they are switching off.

One said: ‘We’ve stopped watching BBC Breakfast when he [Dan] is on, because he doesn’t stop banging on about Strictly. Extra exposure that other contestants don’t get.’

Two weeks ago, Walker appealed to fans not to blame him for still being on the programme, saying in a tweet: ‘Please don’t shout at me, I’m having an amazing time, my kids are delighted and it’s only a TV show.

‘For those asking, I don’t know who is voting for us (probably not Craig) but we’re incredibly thankful to everyone who is.’

However, in an interview yesterday Craig Revel Horwood admitted that he was fond of Walker.

He told Weekend magazine: ‘I rather fell in love with Dan and I didn’t expect to. Looking at his dancing, I had no clue why people were voting for him before.

‘But suddenly I thought, ‘Oh, I see why – he’s really sweet.’ I learned a lot about why people vote for who they do.’

Of the five other celebrities left on Strictly, three have a connection to the BBC. Both Rhys Stephenson and Tilly Ramsay appear on its children’s channel CBeebies, while Rose Ayling-Ellis is an actress on EastEnders.

Meanwhile, A.J. Odudu and her partner Kai Widdrington performed an energetic routine.

The TV star danced to Make Me Feel by Janelle Monae and won 36 points.

Last night John Whaite and Johannes Radebe topped the leader board with 39, while Tilly Ramsay and Nikita Kuzmin were at the bottom with 30.
